Grilling technology hasn’t changed much over the past few decades. However, the famous “Green Egg” grill has made waves with its innovative design, striking appearance, and its ability to cook food faster and more evenly. You can even cook pizza in it! That being said, is the Green Egg pizza stone worth the money?
If you plan on baking pizza in your new grill, then purchasing the Green Egg pizza stone is a great investment! It will ensure that your pizza doesn’t burn or sag in the spaces between the griddle. You can also use the Green Egg pizza stone for baking other foods such as breadsticks, cookies, calzones, and more.
I just recently started using my Green Egg to bake pizzas in. I quickly discovered that a pizza stone was a necessity if I was going to do it right. Thankfully, Green Egg makes their own pizza stone that’s designed to fit perfectly inside of your Green Egg grill! In today’s post, I’m going to share my experience thus far and answer some of the most common questions I’ve gotten about my new pizza stone.
Green Egg Pizza Stone Review
When the Green Egg grill first came out, I automatically knew that I wanted one. Originally, I just planned on using it for cooking burgers, hotdogs, and sausages (the usual cookout foods). At the time, I already had a nice countertop pizza oven in my kitchen that I used to bake small pizzas with.
Recently, however, I saw a YouTube video showing some guy baking pizzas in his Green Egg. So, being the pizza fanatic I am, I decided that I wanted to do the same.
That’s when I found out that Green Egg actually sells stones designed to be used with their ovens. Over the past few months, I’ve had a lot of questions about my pizza stone, so I figured that I’d do my best to answer the more important questions and outline the features here.
What Is The Green Egg Pizza Stone Made From?
Like most traditional stones, the Green Egg pizza stone is crafted from a single thick piece of oven-grade ceramic. When it came in the mail, it was actually a lot thicker than I expected it to be. It’s almost a full inch thick, making it almost as big as the built-in ceramic plate in my Forno Bravo pizza oven!
Can I Use The Pizza Stone For Other Foods As Well?
Although most people typically use pizza stones to cook pizza with (duh!), I quickly discovered that it’s helpful for cooking a number of other foods as well. Essentially, the stone keeps whatever you’re cooking from falling in between the cracks in the grate, and ensures that flat-bottomed, crusted foods cook evenly and have a nice crispy bottom.
Some of the other foods I’ve cooked in the Green Egg using the stone include:
- Cookies.
- Breadsticks.
- Tortillas.
- Pretzels.
- Calzones.
Definitely don’t limit yourself to just cooking pizza!
Can You Use The Green Egg Pizza Stone In A Wood-Fired Oven?
Although the Green Egg pizza stone is designed to fit perfectly inside of a Green Egg grill, you can also use it in other types of ovens as well. Whether you’re using it in your conventional kitchen oven or a 1,000-degree wood-fired pellet oven, you’ll find that it performs well in almost any condition!
What Sizes Are Available?
Like most stones, it has a circular design, so the measurement is the diameter from one side to the other. The sizes are meant to fit into the different sizes of Green Egg you might have (Small, Medium, Large, XLarge, 2XLarge Green Eggs). The Green Egg pizza stone is available in the following sizes:
- 12-inch diameter.
- 14-inch diameter.
- 21-inch diameter.
Does The Green Egg Pizza Stone Get Dirty?
Like most cooking trays, your green egg pizza stone is going to get dirty after you use it a few times. There’s simply no avoiding it. It’s not like that non-stick metal pan that your grandma has! However, they’re fairly easy to clean with a bit of baking soda, water, and some good old-fashioned elbow grease. Here’s my full post on how to clean a pizza stone.
How Does The Green Egg Stone Compare To Other Pizza Stones?
The other day, I wrote a review on the Kamado Joe pizza stone, which looks almost identical. Overall, they’re pretty much the same stone. Both are made from oven-grade ceramic, are thick enough to evenly cook your pizza, and can be used in a grill. The thing that I like about the Green Egg pizza stone, though, is that it’s designed to fit perfectly inside of your Green Egg grill, so you won’t have any problems with it being too small or large.
Final Thoughts
Overall, the Green Egg pizza stone is a lot like other ceramic stones you’ll find. However, the advantage of this particular stone is that it’s designed to fit directly into your Green Egg grill, so you won’t have to worry about it being too small or too large to fit! Once you buy it, you’ll be able to use it in both your Green Egg grill or any other pizza oven you have.
