Asheville, North Carolina, is one of the most diverse, inclusive, and lively cities in the Southeast. In addition to its culture, however, Asheville has become a food and beverage hub. No matter what type of food you’re looking for, you’ll be able to find it! Of course, this begs the question, where is the best pizza in Asheville?
Mellow Mushroom has some of the best pizza in Asheville. They’re known for their constantly-changing pizza menu and unique recipes. Located in the heart of downtown, it has an amazing outdoor porch area that frequently hosts live musicians and other performers.
In today’s post, I’m going to show you some of the best pizzas you should try next time you visit. If you’re the type who can’t get enough pizza, then I’ll also mention a few other great pizza spots worth checking out when you’re in Asheville. It’s chow time!
Mellow Mushroom: Asheville’s Best Pizza Spot
I’ve been to Asheville on more than a few occasions. Each time I’m there, I always make an effort to try a new restaurant or food truck. However, no matter how many times I go back, I almost always end up stopping at Mellow Mushroom.
Their pizza is just that good! It’s nothing like the overly-salted, processed-tasting Little Caesars’ Pizza that I have to eat on my road trips.
In addition to their pies, the vibe you’ll get from Mellow is out of this world. It’s a whole experience. I usually sit outside, where I can enjoy local music acts (and sometimes the occasional comedian) with my food. Also, if you like beer, they have an amazing selection of craft brews that few other restaurants in Asheville can beat.
The Best Pizzas At Mellow Mushroom
Generally speaking, I prefer simple, delicious Margherita-style pizzas with a glass of wine. Whenever I go to Mellow Mushroom, though, I tend to switch things up. They have a number of unique options for crust, toppings, and base sauce. So, that being said, here are the best pizzas they have to offer (in my humble opinion).
The Great White
The Great White pizza is a classic Italian-inspired pizza that reminds me of the homemade Neapolitan-style pies I like to bake in my pellet pizza oven. It has a simple olive oil, tomato, and garlic base and is topped with sun-dried tomatoes, fresh feta, a bit of onion, and mozzarella. It’s a simple, classic pie with fresh, local ingredients, so you can’t go wrong!
Kosmic Karma
The Kosmic Karma is probably one of the most unique pizzas I’ve tried at Mellow. It has a simple tomato sauce base on a thick crust and is topped with mozzarella, feta, and spinach. What makes it so unique, though is the finishing swirl of pesto that they put on top of the pie. I would have never thought pesto would go well with pizza, but boy did they prove me wrong!
Veg Out
When most people think about vegetarian pizzas, they might be thinking of those low-carb cauliflower pizzas with the crumbly, slightly soggy crusts. However, Mellow Mushroom’s “Veg Out” pizza tastes a lot better. It’s feature’s their signature red tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, and is topped with fresh veggies, including spinach, green bell peppers, onions, Roma tomatoes, and black olives.
Other Great Pizza Spots In Asheville
While Mellow Mushroom is easily the best pizza in Asheville, there are also a couple of other pizzerias that I’ve been to that are worth your time. Both Barley’s Taproom and White Labs Kitchen have fresh-baked pizza dough and amazing recipes. Whether you’re looking for a quick slice or a whole pie, I’d definitely recommend checking them out!
Barley’s Taproom and Pizzeria
Barley’s is a two-story pizzeria that also happens to have a wide selection of beer and wine. If you happen to be vegan or vegetarian, then Barley’s has some of Asheville’s best vegan pizza options. On the other hand, if you prefer the meats (like myself), their pepperoni pizza is to die for!
White Labs Kitchen and Tap
White Labs Kitchen and Tap has taken pizza-making to a whole new level! They make their own dough using their custom-formulated liquid yeast and then cook all of their pizzas in a wood-fired oven.
The result is a pizza that tastes like it came straight out of an old Italian pizzeria. Combine that with their tap selection of noteworthy craft brews, and you’ll have an unforgettable lunch or dinner. White Labs is almost on par with Mellow Mushroom in my opinion!
