Who doesn’t love a good slice of pizza? The popular Italian dish is easily one of the most well-known dishes in the entire world and is served in almost every single continent to one degree or another. The most common flavors are probably pepperoni and, of course, good old-fashioned cheese pizza.
Recently, I had one of my foreign friends ask me, “Is ‘supreme’ a type of pizza?” Yes, Supreme is a type of pizza. Supreme pizza typically includes a wide variety of toppings including meat, vegetables, olives, and extra seasoning.

What Is Supreme Pizza?
Today, if you go to most major pizza chains (and even small artisan pizzerias like the ones I visited in Asheville recently), you’ll find that almost all of them offer supreme pizza. That being said, where did supreme pizza come from and why has it become so popular?
Since the first Neapolitan-style pizzas were made in Italy, they had toppings. At first, the only toppings used were tomatoes and fresh herbs, which were commonly found in most people’s home gardens. However, once pizza found its way to America, it quickly changed.
In order to cater to America’s vast and diverse cultural population, pizzerias created new combinations of toppings. At first, meats were added. Then, they started adding vegetables. And finally, in 1977, Pizza Hut became the first large chain to popularize its new “supreme” pizza.
The new supreme pizza offered almost all of the various toppings that Pizza Hut had at the time (hence the name “supreme”). It wasn’t long before a number of other popular pizza chains, local pizzerias, and frozen pizza brands adopted the flavor combination and started offering it to their customers.
What Are The Most Common Toppings On Supreme Pizza?
Supreme pizza probably has more toppings than almost any other type of pizza. The classic supreme pizza recipe has the following toppings:
- Green bell peppers
- Black olives.
Oregano seasoning is often added as well, which complements the diverse flavor of the veggies and meats. The trick to making a great supreme pizza is to properly layer all of the ingredients. Of course, not everybody likes all of these toppings (especially the onions). In that case, you can always request to substitute or remove the toppings that you don’t like.
What Type Of Cheese Is Used For Supreme Pizza?
Pretty much every pizza on the market uses a high-quality shredded mozzarella cheese (such as Galbani’s low-moisture mozzarella). Mozzarella is a low-fat, light-flavored cheese that doesn’t overpower the other ingredients on the pizza, won’t fill you up too much, and melts very well when cooked in the oven.
Is Supreme Pizza Healthy?
While no pizza is 100% “healthy,” supreme pizza is definitely one of the healthier options that you can choose from. The added pepperoni and sausage ensure that you’re getting a good amount of protein, and all of the veggies offer a nice serving of important vitamins and minerals.
The unhealthy part of supreme pizza is, of course, the bread and all of the cheese. While one slice isn’t necessarily bad for you, most people end up eating at least two or three slices, which can easily total up to 1,000 calories or more (which is half of your daily recommended caloric intake). If you want to go even healthier, though, I’d also encourage you to try a supreme pizza made with a low-carb cauliflower crust.
Where Can I Buy Supreme Pizza?
Pretty much everywhere that sells pizza sells some form of supreme pizza. Some of my favorite delivery chains that sell it are Domino’s, Papa John’s, and Pizza Hut. If you’re looking for a more affordable supreme pizza, then you might try Little Caesar’s or buy a frozen supreme pizza from your local grocery store and cook it in a nice pizza oven.
If you’ve been debating whether or not to give supreme pizza a try, then I would tell you to go for it! As long as you like meat and veggies, then you’ll be happy, as it’s basically a meat lover’s pizza mixed with a vegetable lover’s pizza. They’re tasty, crunchy, and the added veggies make it somewhat healthier than other popular pizza flavors on the market.
